Rafting: round 2, class III, Pucon, Chile

We enjoyed rafting the Maipo outside Santiago so much that I was concerned that another river run could disappoint.  No need to have worried!  I think the Maipo maxed out at class II rapids and here there were some class III.  The kids noticed the difference and it was a good progression.  There is something about this activity that everyone in the family seems to love.  Look around the boat at any point and we all have either a serene calm on our faces, reflecting the beautiful natural environment that we are, or a huge grin, or a scream or a whoop as we crash through the white water. At points we could see the volcano that I stood on the top of yesterday.  There are opportunities to jump in to have a swim.  It's just good old wholesome family fun.  Here's the evidence - there are so many great expressions, I have put in a lot of pictures:

Yes, Toby has his tongue out!

Is Toby having the time of his life?!

Yellow submarine time

Toby has taken shelter below the gunwales...

They took this picture before we started, with the volcano in the background

After our fun on the river, we decided to celebrate the impending end of our time in Chile with a final meal out.  This was one of those occasions where fate was on our side.  We were on the hunt for pastel de choclo.  The first place we tried, and indeed sat down in, turned out to be offering only bar snacks as the kitchen was closed. Then we found a whole bunch that were closed, and in a somewhat last ditch effort came upon a simple looking place with an inviting outside courtyard and a Chilean vibe.  Turns out we were served by a Haitian woman which meant we could order in French, somewhat ironically.  Pastel de choclo is a dish made of a pina meat sauce, in this case beef with some chicken drumsticks and half a hard boiled egg, topped with a creamy sweetcorn paste.  It is delicious.  Chile isn't known for its cuisine but we have sampled some of the mainstays: chorrillana (fries, cheese, meat, sauce, eggs); churros (deep fried donut sticks); completo (hot dog with avocado, salsa, mayonnaise); empanadas (pastry pies with various fillings including cheese and shrimp; pina etc).
Back to the restaurant.  Lovely weather, lovely courtyard, delicious food, just perfect.  I don't normally feel that way about eating out.  But then again, this is Pucon...

Oh, and the kids had nuggets and fries :-(
